Is the LeBron Vogue cover racist?

March 25th, 2008 · Filed under Sports, Style

When Vogue magazine announced basketball superstar LeBron James would be the first black man to grace its cover, it was something of a big deal in fashion circles.

Now the April cover is coming under fire from critics who say LeBron’s pose, while holding supermodel Giselle Bundchen, perpetuates racial stereotypes and gives him a “beastly kind of vibe”.

Yahoo! News reports that Samir Husni, a magazine analyst, say the photo is deliberately provocative and “screams King Kong”.

“So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman, it’s not innocent,” he says.

Go New York Giants!

From left: The Giants’ Eli Manning, this year’s Superbowl MVP, with brother and last year’s MVP, Peyton Manning

Remember when DrJays.com’s CFO Jean Patrick Charles broke down all the reasons the New York Giants would whoop the New England Patriots’ a** in the Superbowl?

Well – he was right! GO GIANTS!

Now a message from our CFO:

The New England Patriots have a Hall of Fame coach, quarterback and wide receiver and there was an air of inevitability about 19-0. But somehow, in the biggest upset since the tortoise versus the hare, the Giants won the Super Bowl in this paradoxical David and Goliath match up.

So kudos to the Patriots for their excellence in the pursuit of perfection, and thanks to the Giants for inspiring us all to stay resolute against improbable odds, contrary to all the naysayers and the pundits. That’s the reason we play the game and in life, we never say never.

The Giants to beat the Patriots?

January 24th, 2008 · Filed under Sports

giants-helmet.jpg

DRJAYS.COM FEARLESS PREDICTION:

The New York Giants will beat the New England Patriots 27-21 in Super Bowl XLII.

Why?

1. New York needs it:

When you look at the three major sports in the US – NBA, NFL and MLB (we’re not even getting into the debate about NASCAR or NHL) – it’s been slim pickings for the Big Apple of late. The Knicks last win was in 1973, the Jets in 1969, the Mets in 1986, the Giants in 1991 and the Yankees in 2000. By comparison, the Patriots won in 2002, 2004 and 2005 and the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. Heck, if you include soccer – the world’s most popular sport – the New England Revolution have eliminated the New York Red Bulls the last two years in the playoffs.

2. History in the making:

No, no, no – not 19-0, but the Manning brothers winning back to back Bowls as QB. Very much in the tradition of Venus and Serena’s tennis run from 2000-2003, where they won nine out of 16 Grand Slam titles.

3. Eli needs it:

Not only will this mean he steps out of Peyton’s shadow, but also he silences all of the critics who bitterly complain the Giants should not have traded up for the #1 draft pick because they could have selected Phillip Rivers or Ben Roethslinger at#4.

4. Tom Brady doesn’t need it:

He’s good-looking, he already has three rings, had Bridget Moynahan, has Giselle, the list goes on. There’s just no need for him to be the first 19-0 QB.

5. Karma:

Belichick (Patriots coach) and his non-handshakes and “camera gate”, the Moss signing…well, Strahan held out, so maybe this one is a stretch.

Are we being provocative? Perhaps. Are we crazy? That’s for you to decide. Are we fans? Definitely.

This from our company CFO – he wants you all to know he did win the DrJays.com Fantasy Basketball Smackdown in its inaugural season, so he believes he has a little more credibility than many of you other pundits out there…

Should Marion Jones be imprisoned?

Marion Jones

Marion Jones, the international superstar who won three gold and two bronze medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, was today sentenced to six months in jail for lying to investigators about performance-enhancing drugs and a check-fraud scam.

After learning her fate in a White Plains, New York couthouse, Jones broke down crying.

She hoped to avoid prison due to being apart from her two young sons, but U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas said he was giving her six months “because of the need for general deterrence and the need to promote respect for the law.”

According to the New York Post, Jones returned her Olympic medals (golds in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay and bronzes in the long jump and 400-meter relay) even before the International Olympic Committee ordered her to do so and wiped her records from the books.

Jones was ordered to surrender on March 11 to begin her term.

Jay-Z with his New Jersey Nets jersey

From XXLMag.com:

As if being a part owner of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets wasn’t enough, Jay-Z and his Rocawear clothing line are vying to win the naming-rights to the Nets’ arena.

Currently called Continental Airlines Arena, the stadium, which is located in the Meadowlands area of East Rutherford, NJ, has opened up bidding to secure a new name.

According to the newspaper Bergen Record, Continental Airlines dropped its 11-year affiliation with the arena after the NHL’s New Jersey Devils decided to build a new stadium in Newark, NJ.

Now Rocawear and other clothing lines, such as Izod and Southpole, have placed bids to rename the stadium.

“We’re looking forward to presentations by bidders next week, and then we’ll get into the process of evaluation,” NJSEA President, George Zoffinger, told the Bergen Record. “I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to over-achieve the current financial deal that we [had] with Continental.”

Footballer turned rapper Famouz

On September 25th, football player turned rapper Famouz (aka FMZ) will drop his debut album, Ghetto Passport (original title right?).

The former New York Giant’s album features a number of guests, including E-40 and Bun B.

Famouz’s football career started at Rutgers University, with a four year walk-on career with the New York Giants. It ended with a stint playing in the Arena Football League for the Nashville Kats.

“I have a lot of friends that still play football,” he says. “They know that I’ve been working on this music stuff for along time. I’m not going to mention names right now, but come on, I was a former Giant. But aside from those surprise guests, in the long run, my music will definitely speak for itself.”

Famouz follows in the footsteps of other athletes who’ve attempted a rap career, including basketballers Shaquille O’Neal and Ron Artest and boxer Roy Jones Jr.

Skateboarding may be in the 2012 Olympics

Great news for all you skaters!

From NIKESB.org:

Skateboarding could make its Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games.

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it has held discussions with cycling’s world governing body about introducing skateboarding as a discipline for the London program.

Skateboarding events are part of the X Games, and the IOC is eager to modernize the Olympic program with sports and disciplines that appeal to youth. It has already added snowboarding to the Winter Games and BMX cycling for next year’s Beijing Olympics.

“The IOC wants to make the program relevant for young people,” IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said.

The proposed venue for skateboarding in London is the velodrome in the Olympic Park.

“We are doing our best to introduce skateboarding for 2012,” UCI sports director Olivier Quejuiner told the London Evening Standard. “We have a clear strategy…the venue could be wonderful. All we need now is the green light from the IOC. Technically, logistically and in terms of cost, it would not be a problem to stage the event in 2012.”
